The title is ironic (I mean, I’m pretty sure it’s ironic), but Jesse Thorn’s article about how to succeed as a content creator is a must read for anyone who wants to make a living out of making things.
Bret Victor gives an incredible talk on the importance of living a life based on personal fundamental principles, and gives some mind-blowing examples of tools he developed following his personal principle that creators should have direct interaction with the things they are creating.
Letters of Note is quickly becoming my favorite blog in the world. Today’s entry has letters from Theodore Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) giving advice to a young aspiring writer and artist in the 50s, and then their continued correspondence 26 years later. Wonderful to see such a giving nature, and such great advice.
“It’s like there’s a gap. For the first couple years that you’re making stuff, what you’re making isn’t so good, okay … it’s not that great. It’s really not that great. It’s … it’s trying to be good, it has some ambition to be good, but it’s not quite that good. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game — your taste is still killer.”
Watch this, okay? Especially you creative types. It’s important.
Wonderful advice for any aspiring writer, director, actor, or anyone interested in excellence within a creative field.
